8 - Years of Experience

With generations of gear heads in his family, all roads led to a career in cars for Cole Evans. Exposure to motorsports happened early on, and for his 5th birthday, Cole’s dad bought him a Suzuki PeWe Junior 50 dirt bike. From that moment, the gas combustion engine would forever become a focal point.

Growing up, you could find Cole in the garage playing helper, handing Dad the wrench as he fixed dirt bikes and got ready for his races. Also a big car enthusiast who schooled the young man on mechanical knowledge, Cole’s grandfather has a 1976 Fiat 125 Spyder — a car that they not only restored together, but also gave Cole his first stickshift education.

Cole’s first car was a 1972 VW Beetle that he souped up into a Baja Bug in his driveway at age 15. Cole pulled the engine and did a big refresh on that car by himself, which paid off in status as the coolest kid in the high school parking lot. Come college, Cole made his way to Colorado to join the Fort Lewis College downhill mountain biking race team and study pre-med. An unfortunate crash sidelined Cole to the point where he had to move back home to New Jersey to recover, taking some time to rethink his career path in the process.

Cole’s mom knew that her son gravitated toward Volkswagen Automotive Group (VAG) cars. She introduced him to the owner of a small, local Porsche repair shop, Provost Motorsports, where he started working as a shop hand. The owner encouraged Cole to get some proper training via technical school. Off to Mercer County Community College he went, completing their automotive program and an associate degree, to boot. While in school, he interned at Princeton Audi and then went on to work for a custom Subaru and Mitsubishi Evo performance shop. After graduation, he managed that small tuning shop, realizing pretty quickly that Japanese cars weren’t his style.

From there, he packed his toolbox for Horsham, PA, to lead the installation department at AWE Tuning headquarters. A year in and ready for a change of scenery, Cole’s best friend bullied him into moving to Charlotte, NC, where he started working at GMP Performance, transitioning into their lead technician. With a solid spectrum of mechanical work under his belt, Cole’s road finally converged with Berg Performance. Colorado had been beckoning him back ever since his untimely departure, and a lucky Indeed search turned up a position at Berg — a job description that sounded too good to be true turned dream job.

Currently, Cole drives a 2017 VW Alltrack six-speed manual that has just about every bolt-on performance modification known to man. An air-cooled Porsche fan, he aspires to one day own a Porsche 964 outlaw build in mint green — a funky match to his personality. While he has no car projects on his docket at the moment, the last car Cole built and sold for his move to Colorado was a 1991 Mk2 VW Jetta Coupe with a 20v 1.8t swap. As he describes it, that car spit flames and roasted tires quite well. When he does get around to the next car project, the bucket list has a 1980 Volkswagen pickup with lipstick red interior and a 1.9 AHU TDI engine swap in store. But first, a house is on the list.

As enthusiast as they come, Cole’s blood type is 5W40. VAG cars aren't just his job, but a lifestyle, making him a huge advocate for finding ways to tweak cars to fit customers’ personalities. Want to be able to take a corner with more speed and confidence? Coilovers here we come! How about hearing that engine sing more when mashing the go pedal? A performance exhaust will fill all of your heart's desires.
